Service Learning in Health Professions Education

Instructional Strategy

Information Presentation

The website will guide the students through components, benefits, and outcomes of service-learning. Students will explore websites for service learning projects. The premise for this activity is that community-based education coordinators cannot facilitate service-learning projects for health professions students without a clear understanding of the various aspects of service learning.

Student Participation

Students will complete the following activities:

  • Review the pages on the WebQuest to learn about the benefits and components of service-learning.
  • Explore service-learning web pages of academic institutions and community organizations to learn about formal service-learning projects for health professions students.
  • Collaborate with their supervisor and identify specific service needs in the communities in their service region and identify service-learning projects for health professions students on community rotations.
  • Take a post assessment.

Evaluation Strategy

Students will take a post-assessment to evaluate their learning outcomes. Students will also be asked to complete an evaluation about the WebQuest. This information will be processed by submitting their information to the WebQuest developer via e-mail. The developer and teacher will provide feedback to the student on the post-assessment. Students who do not do well on the post-assessment will be provided with additional mentoring from the teacher and the developer, and will be asked to review the WebQuest and related links in more detail.

The student’s supervisor (teacher) will have access to the design document as well as the WebQuest. The teacher will also submit an evaluation about the WebQuest. Revisions to the WebQuest will be made based on feedback from the teachers and students.

Outline

Introduction
This page states for whom the WebQuest is for and provides the rationale for the activity. It begins with a motivational statement to inspire the students desire to learn. It contains a brief explanation of service-learning and includes the overall goal of the project.
Task
The task describes what the student will do as outlined in Student Participation above. It also includes the objectives for the WebQuest.

Process
This area provides the bulk of the information. It provides detailed information about service learning components, outcomes, and benefits. Links to academic institutions and community-based organizations are provided for the student to explore different types of service-learning programs and outcomes. At the end of this section students are instructed to confer with their supervisor and identify needed service activities in communities in their service region.
Resources
The links described above will also be included in this area, as well as other relevant reading resources.

Evaluation
Students will submit a post-assessment as well as a feedback survey about the WebQuest.
Conclusion
The aspects of service-learning will be summarized here. Students are encouraged to identify relevant community service-learning activities and partner with community-based organizations to implement service-learning activities for health professions students.
