A note to East Texas AHEC Center Directors and supervisors of community-based education coordinators:

This website is designed to provide community-based education (CBE) coordinators with an overview of service-learning in health professions education. The premise is that by providing CBE coordinators with the concepts of service-learning, they will be better equipped to work with members of the community and health professions students in engaging the students in service activities that meet the needs of the community. Whether these activities are a part of the student’s structured learning experience or simply an extra-curricular activity while on a community rotation, service-learning activities can benefit both the student and the community. An added benefit is that by engaging health professions students in community activities, they will feel that they are a part of the community. This may ultimately play a part in a student’s decision about where to practice upon graduation from their health professions program.

Please review the pages on this website and submit the Website Evaluation Survey. Once the CBE coordinator has reviewed the website, including the links to health professions institutions and service-learning organizations on the resource page, please conference with the CBE coordinator and identify potential service-learning activities that health professions students can participate in to meet the needs of the communities in your region. Provide the coordinator with contact information on individuals and community organizations that can facilitate service-learning activities.
