BRIEF AHEC HISTORY
 
 
  • The 1970 report from the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education studied workforce development and identified an emerging shortage of healthcare personnel in primary care.

  • In 1971 Congress created the Comprehensive Health Manpower Training Act, and introduced the National AHEC Program.

    Its Mission: To enhance access to quality health care, by improving the distribution of health care professionals through community/academic educational partnerships.

    The Process: Area health education center cooperative agreements are awarded to public or private nonprofit accredited schools of allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
